Markham Speed Skating

Markham Speed Skating welcomes members of all ages, skill levels and skating goals.

Our club members include children, teens and adults.  Some begin with little or no skating experience, while others bring skills from hockey, ringette or figure skating.  It takes a bit of time to adapt to the long blades, learn racing strategies and techniques for maintaining high speeds.

We provide coaching for beginners to Provincial and even National competitors.  Many members race at regional and provincial competitions, while others enjoy the challenge and fun of club activities.  You can progress at your own rate.

We follow the Long Term Athlete Development Model created by Sports Canada.  This means that we focus on personal bests and improving technique.  Skaters are grouped into Fundamental, Learn to Train and Training to Train/Learning to Compete groups based on age/developmental stage and skating ability.

Our coaches are qualified and experienced. Head Coach Stephanie Bowskill was a provincial champion for 8 years consecutively, and won the Canadian Age Class Championships in 2009 before moving away at the end of the season. In 2010, she accepted a second invitation from Montreal-International (now known as the RTC). She skated at the National Training Centre for 3 years and competed nationally. She was always a high-ranked Junior skater and participated in the National Team Selections each year, placing within the top 16. She also competed at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax.

When do we practice?

Our weekly practices are held at Mount Joy Community Centre (see Contact Us).

Tuesdays from 7pm-10pm

Fridays from 6:30pm-9:30pm

Guest skaters need to contact the club at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to confirm availability and for times of their group.

Skaters are split into three groups based on ability. Beginners skate in group 1, intermediate skaters in group 2, and advanced skaters are in group 3. Groups are made and can be changed at any time at the discretion of the coaches.

We welcome visitors from other clubs who want to skate with us!

However, to ensure fairness and priority for our own members, we have instituted the following rules:

  • Visitors must be fully paid-up members of another OSSA club
  • The fee is $30 per person per ice session on an occasional basis. Refer to Fee Schedule for Current Fees
  • Coaches have the right to deny or limit a visitor the use of the ice if, in his/her opinion, that person will interfere with the training program

Our purpose is to give our own young members the full opportunity to develop their racing abilities with the ice-time resources that we have. But we also recognize the value of new faces and competitive abilities as positive stimuli which can enhance everyone's experience.
